Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken mainly in Sweden but also in Finland. It is spoken by about 10 million people. Swedish is a relatively easy language to learn for English speakers as its grammar and sentence structure are very similar to English.

Russian is the native language of some 160 million citizens of the Russian Federal Republic. It is one of the six official languages of the UN and ranks with English, Chinese and Spanish as a major world language. Russian remains the unofficial lingua franca of the former Soviet republics.

Japanese is spoken by 128 million people, primarily in Japan. Japanese uses four different systems of writing, these are: kanji (Chinese characters) hiragana, katakana and romanji. Hiragana is symbolic and the most original writing system in Japan.

Latin is a concise, flexible and beautiful language which was used for centuries both in everyday life and by scholars. It has provided vocabulary and concepts widely employed in law, politics, theology, medicine and in many texts of the musical tradition.

Urdu language is a member of the Indo-Aryan group within the Indo-European family of languages. It is spoken by more than 100 million people, predominantly in Pakistan and India. It is the official state language of Pakistan.

Did you know that the word Punjab comes from Persian and means ‘The Land of Five Rivers. It is the official language of the State of Punjab in India, but the biggest speaker group is found in Pakistan. It is one of the largest immigrant languages spoken in Canada.

Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world with more than one billion native speakers. Mandarin (standard Chinese) is the official language of China and it is one of the six official languages used by the UN.

All Arabic courses at King’s are taught by native speakers with their own personal experience of the language, hailing from a range of countries in the Arab world. They have been trained to teach Modern Standard Arabic, which is used in books, newspapers, television and radio.

Bengali is spoken by more than 210 million people as a first or second language. It is usually ranked about seventh in the world in terms of number of people who speak it as a first language.
