About this course:

Media is a powerful tool for promoting social justice. If you are an activist involved in promoting or advocating for a social cause, this course will provide you with valuable information and guidance.

The course will help you to identify and pitch a newsworthy story, select appropriate media for publicising your story; and assess the impact of your story. The course also addresses working in an ethical way as both an activist and citizen journalist.

  • - Paul McNally is a journalist living in Johannesburg. He was a Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow in 2016 at Harvard University. He is the author of the non-fiction book The Street: Exposing a World of Cops, Bribes and Drug Dealers (which was long-listed for the Alan Paton) (www.thestreetbook.co.za) and is the Director of Citizen Justice Network (www.citizenjusticenetwork.org), a project that trains community paralegals to be radio journalists. - Boikaego Dolphus Seadira is the Development Communication lecturer in the department of Wits Journalism and Media. The Development Communication is a Programme which examines new ways of interacting with journalists, as well as utilising social media platforms, speeches and publications to directly involve people in development their initiatives. Boikaego provided consulting services to, Government Communication and Information System on ICTs for rural development in the North West, the North West University Vaal campus radio and, the Central University of Technology campus radio. He translated annual reports for the North West Provincial government’s Social Development - Susan Stos attained an Honours BA in English Literature from McMaster University in Canada, embarking on a career in television production and journalism while working in the national newsroom of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Upon immigrating to South Africa, she became the first Producer/Director of Carte Blanche, which was then a new cutting-edge weekly current affairs program. She went on to become Executive Producer/Director of Carte Blanche Africa. - Zandile holds a B.A Communications degree from the University of Limpopo and various professional development certificates to augment her competencies. She previously worked as a project officer for Higher Education and Training HIV/AIDS programme overseeing the implementation of the Future Beats programme. She has also worked with various organizations such as HEAIDS, Webber Wentzel, Harmony Gold and The Mining Qualifications Authority as a communications and branding assistant. She has also been a newsreader at Radio Turf and a content producer for Soweto TV’s Dlala Nge Ringas. - Gladys Matasane is a passionate Communication Specialist who has worked in the communication field for various industries including Mining, IT and Public Relations. She has BA Corporate Communication and BA Honors Strategic Communication from the University of Johannesburg. She has great interest in digital transformation and using communication and employee engagement to transform organizations. Gladys is also passionate about social justice and empowerment of women and girls.
