About the Language

Recognized as one of the 23 languages of the European Union since May 2004, this West Slavic Language is spoken by around 96% of the population in Czech Republic. Besides, it is also used by the people of Austria (particularly in Vienna), Poland, Germany, Ukraine (the Volhynian Czechs), Croatia (especially around Daruvar), and in Western Romania (Banat).

There is some degree of similarity and mutual intelligibility between Czech and Slovak, and also Polish and Sorbian. As per the appropriate laws and authorities act, Czech can be used in all official proceedings also in Slovakia as granted by Article 6 of Slovak Minority Language Act.

Originated in Dutch in the 17th century, Afrikaans belongs to the West Germanic family of languages. Spoken mainly in South Africa and Namibia, there are also speakers of Afrikaans in Australia, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Germany, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, UK, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Most of its vocabulary has been inherited from languages like Portuguese, Malay, Bantu and Khoisan languages.
