Are you a strategic thinker who is intrigued by how cities are actually designed and built? Do you have an affinity for understanding how these systems work in harmony, how they are first conceived and how they are constructed?
Do you want to pursue a fulfilling career with a wide spectrum of exposure? Do you want to make a difference to the lives of individuals, society and the civilized world as a whole?
If your answer to these questions is a resounding “Yes!”, then Civil Engineering is a career path you might want to seriously consider. Civil Engineering is involved in the whole value chain of all infrastructures, such as skyscrapers, highways, bridges, airports, railways etc.
, from the very beginning of design, to construction and finally the maintenance of these completed developments. Civil Engineers are responsible for ensuring all works are done in a professional and ethical manner, and most importantly, safe for our daily usage.
Why DCESP
Being the one and only full-time Civil Engineering diploma in Singapore, our Diploma in Civil Engineering (DCE) course prepares you to be skilled and competent in Civil Engineering fundamentals and technologies to embark on an exciting journey of the industry transformation in this digital economy
. As one of the broadest fields in engineering, Civil Engineering deals with the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructures.
With ever-changing needs in how we live, work, travel and play, at DCE, you will learn to seek innovative solutions to design and develop a better living environment for all. DCE graduates are in high demand with various career opportunities.
Global trends shaping the industry and the course
Singapore’s construction demand is expected to remain strong with larger and more complex projects such as Changi Airport Terminal 5, Jurong Region and Cross Island MRT lines coming up.
With stable and sustained growth in construction demand over the next few years, the built environment sector needs to be more productive and competitive by continuing to leverage technologies and emerging trends.
In the most recent Built Environment Industry Transformation Map (BE ITM), 3 key strategies, namely Integrated Planning and Design, Advanced Manufacturing and Assembly, and Sustainable Urban Systems, are formulated to drive collaboration, automate fabrication and accelerate decarbonisation in the BE sector. The curriculum at DCE will equip you with the skillsets that are aligned with the BE ITM.
Overview - Teaching And Learning
SP's approach to teaching and learning is not confined to any one particular approach or set of methods. It is committed to an eclectic research-based orientation for the design of learning (whether for classroom teaching or online learning).
At present, this comprises two interrelated frameworks - 'The Learning Framework' and 'The Creative Teaching Framework' - that teaching staff can use as they seek to design effective and creative learning experiences for our students.
What's exciting about SP's approach to teaching and learning is the commitment to incorporating established best research on human learning and validated effective practices. Furthermore, it seeks to be proactive in the sense of creatively extending knowledge and producing innovative practices.
Such work is not just confined to the department - all are invited to contribute to practical action research and be at the forefront of what it means to be a highly competent and creative teaching professional.
The ongoing efforts to mentor, guide, encourage and nurture students have seen our lecturers being accorded the President's Award for Teachers (PAT) in 2017, 2018 and 2020 - making SP the institution with the highest number of award recipients since 2017 when educators from polytechnics and ITEs were included in the PAT. The PAT recognises excellent educators for their role in moulding the future of our nation.
Click on the arrow next to the Innovative Teaching Methods menu on the left and select the profiles of our PAT recipients and finalists to find out more about their unique achievements.
Enhanced Opportunities and Pathways
From Academic Year 2022 onwards, the polytechnics in Singapore will progressively implement a set of recommendations from MOE’s review on opportunities and pathways in applied education. The recommendations will better support the diverse needs and aspirations of our students, provide them with a more flexible and diverse curriculum to pursue their passions, and further strengthen their career readiness and competencies to thrive in the future economy.
In SP, we care about your well-being. As you journey through the ups and downs in SP, the SP Counselling Team is here to lend a listening ear when you need one.

Civil engineering is an incredibly diverse field where people range from totally unqualified individuals to extremely qualified professionals. However so many routes within the trade are not defined.
The need to develop collaborative working is particularly relevant to the modern construction industry, which has to meet the challenges of low carbon construction.
Today’s Civil Engineers not only build modern engineering marvels, but they also contribute to the liveability and sustainability of our environment. They improve the living spaces, fight against climate change, provide clean air and water, and ensure efficient urban mobility.
Managing construction projects requires a combination of technical understanding of construction processes and resource management, as well as familiarity with legal and financial aspects.
The course comprises the below modules with an industrial attachment / integrated project. Keep abreast with the current construction technology in the industry; Perform and supervise the construction works on site effectively.
