Foundation Plumbing (Level 2)

This course will provide you with an introduction to the practical and theoretical skills of plumbing for those new to the plumbing and construction industry.

You will also develop Essential Skills in Communication and Application of Number. 

What Will I Learn?

Overview

The Foundation qualification is your way of entering the construction and built environment sector. It is a great first step into this area, or for building on your previous learning in this subject.

This qualification is offered by the awarding body City & Guilds. It is a made-for-Wales qualification, which means what you’ll learn is tailored to the construction sector in Wales.

Almost 1 out of every 10 workers in Wales is employed in this industry. This means that there are lots of opportunities to do different jobs and roles in this industry.

Unit 1 The Built Enviorenment

In the built environment in Wales, old meets ultra-modern. This unit will help you recognise different types of buildings and structures, and how they help us work and live.

You’ll cover these topics in this unit:

• The types of buildings we live and work in.

• The features of older, traditional buildings, and modern ones.

• The transport, water and energy infrastructure around us.

What Do You Already Know?

• What different types of buildings do you visit regularly?

• Which are the oldest and newest buildings in your local area?

Unit 2 The Trades

Discover the diverse trades in the construction and built environment sector and how they work together on building projects.

You’ll cover these topics in this unit:

• The range of trades in the construction and built environment sector.

• The skills required for traditional and modern construction practices.

• Understanding materials used in different jobs.

What Do You Already Know?

• What different materials are used to make buildings?

• Which jobs work with these materials?

Unit 3 The Building Life Cycle

How buildings are created and maintained, from the first idea to the final product.

You’ll cover these topics in this unit:

• The design and planning of buildings and structures and the different stages of constructing them.

• When building services are installed in building projects.

• Why buildings are maintained, repurposed or even demolished.

Unit 4 Employability

Having a wide range of skills and knowledge will make you more employable. This unit will help you to stand out to potential employers

• Different types of construction jobs, and how to find and apply for them.

• Behaviours that employers value in the construction industry.

• Exploring future educational opportunities, career paths, and basic business economics.

Unit 5 Health, Safety, Envronrment

Working in this sector means keeping yourself, others and the environment safe. This unit will support you to do that.

You’ll cover these topics in this unit:

• Health and safety laws and rules in construction.

• Workplace health, welfare principles, and personal well-being.

• How to manage waste, recycle, prevent pollution, and be considerate to the environment during construction and building.

Unit 6 Emerging Technologies

Explore the newest technologies in the sector, discover how they are used, and get a glimpse into the upcoming innovations that are shaping the future of construction.

You’ll cover these topics in this unit:

• Introduction to the latest technologies in construction, such as augmented and mixed reality.

• How Building Information Modelling (BIM) is used to create and manage construction projects on digital devices.

Entry Requirements

GCSE Grade D or above in Maths and Grade E English/Welsh first Language), or equivalent level 1 qualifications (in this trade)

Further Notes

Purchase of steel toe capped boots, overalls and a course text book is required for this course. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
