At Alliance Française Christchurch, we offer classes for children ages 18 months to 14 years old. Our objective is for young people to learn French in an organic way and to work on their oral and written skills through playful, participatory, and dynamic activities suitable for their age group.

The Alliance Française Christchurch has a range of courses dedicated to 13-18 year-old students who study French at school and wish to BOOST their learning in order to achieve BETTER RESULTS.
What makes the high school students’ courses at Alliance a real advantage
They are COMPLEMENTARY to the school curriculum: new activities and documents will be used to practice and build on the skills and themes learnt at school.
Students will benefit from COMPLETE IMMERSION in the francophone and francophile environment at the Alliance Française.
They use AUTHENTIC CLASS MATERIAL, from French TV, magazines, and movies, carefully chosen and adapted by our educational team.

French For Adults
Alliance Française Christchurch offers a wide range of French courses for all needs and all levels. Small French class sizes of maximum 12 students and highly qualified teachers allow fast progress.
Private lessons
Private or semi-private / On site or online
Classes one-on-one, based on YOUR needs and objectives. The Alliance Française provides private lessons which can be taken either at the Alliance Française or online in the comfort of your own home.
These one-on-one tuitions allow you to learn according to your exact needs. For online lessons, all you need is a broadband connection, (a headset) and a webcam.
Who we are
Established in 1959, the Alliance Française de Christchurch is one of the nine Alliance Françaises in New Zealand. As a local not-for-profit organisation, it reflects the desire to share with others the love of the language, culture and other various aspects of the French way of life.
We offer courses for adults and children of all levels and all ages. All of our teachers are native French speakers and have a degree in French as a foreign language.
Teaching activities are complemented by a wide range of cultural and social events such as the French Film Festival, cooking classes & competitions, film screenings, exhibitions etc. Our library also offers a wide selection of items in French (DVDs, books, magazines) and is open to all for a small annual fee (membership).

A Linguistic Center
We offer a wide range of French language classes. We teach group classes, from beginner to advanced level, in our main branch in Christchurch Central (275 Cashel Street) as well as in our branch in Mount Pleasant community center.
We tailor individual and group classes for professionals, specifically designed to suit our clients' field, goals, time frame and learning style. We offer private tuition for individuals, tailored to their particular learning goals.
A Cultural Center
We organise events throughout the year to share and celebrate French culture with our Kiwi audience. Our annual, nation-wide Alliance Française French Film Festival is a “must go” h for thousands of Christchurch movie buffs, while our Music Festival or Beaujolais nouveau events bring French language and culture together through various entertaining activities and shows.
Our presence in the cultural landscape of Christchurch also includes monthly French breakfasts , monthly French CinéClubs, Quiz Nights, Cheese & Wine nights, School events, and so much more.
Delf and Dalf Diplomas are internationally recognized qualifications that certify the abilities of candidates in the French language.
Learn to speak French in Auckland and Wellington with our fun 8-week French language courses and classes taught by expert native French teachers from France and start speaking French today. In our French A1 language lessons, you will learn French Pronunciation, Greetings, Questions, Colors.
This is an introductory French language course suitable for absolute beginners. We cover basic vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and getting around in French-speaking countries.
There are also opportunities for young New Zealanders to go work overseas in French-speaking countries, such as France, Belgium or Canada while on a Working Holiday Scheme.
