Course Details

This course is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of German. The course introduces the fundamentals of the German language, including pronunciation.

The students will be introduced to the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In this course, we will talk about German culture.

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to carry on a basic German conversation, as well as read and write sentences using the grammatical structures and the vocabulary learned. 

  • Pronounce German vowels and the “Umlaute” (ä, ö, ü)
  • Exchange greetings, both formal and informal
  • Ask people who they are
  • Introduce oneself
  • Give and receive personal information
  • Say goodbye
  • Spell names
  • Count 1 - 1000
  • Name objects in a classroom
  • Name colors
  • Identify gender of nouns
  • Use indefinite article and pronouns
  • Make plans and ask about personal plans
  • Ask what day it is
  • Tell time
  • Describe people
  • Express likes and dislikes
  • Ask formal and informal questions using the w-words (wer, was, wie, wie viel, wie, viele)
  • Give positive and negative responses
  • Use subject pronouns (du, ihr, Sie)
  • Use the present tense of 'sein'and regular verbs
