About German Language

German is a Germanic language, spoken in Germany and the regions of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. It is one of the world’s most widely-spoken first languages.

With an estimated 100 million native speakers, German is also the second most-spoken language in the European Union (after Russian). Besides being a working language of international diplomacy, German is also a cultural import to other parts of Europe and has been influenced by English.

The German language is spoken by a lot of people all over the world but there are some differences between how they speak it depending on where they live. In Germany itself, they speak a dialect called “Hochdeutsch” which means High German. The most common dialects spoken in other countries are “Plattdeutsch” which means Low German or “Kiezdeutsch” which means Urban dialects of German.

Levels of German Language

A1: Basic User – Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.

A2: Independent User – Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

B1: Intermediate User – Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.

B2: Upper-Intermediate User – Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.

C1: Advanced User – Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.

C2: Proficient User – Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
