I’m Sophie, a fully-qualified language tutor in Cardiff. I teach Italian as a foreign language with private lessons online and/or face-to-face. I've spent the past 13 years studying and working with languages and have travelled the world teaching and learning new languages along the way. I'm now based in Cardiff, where I've set up my language learning platform, 'Linguistically Sophie'.
My purpose is to inspire you to learn and use languages, to fall in love with cultures and people around the world, and to enjoy the diversity and fun that speaking a language brings.
Language for Everyone
Perhaps you wish to develop your conversational skills, your writing ability, your grammatical comprehension, or all of the above. Your child may be in Welsh school and you want to enhance your understanding of the language, be able to communicate in Welsh, and help with homework.
You may be studying and find yourself in need of some extra help, clarification, and a boost in confidence. Or you may have never tried a language and are eager to take the plunge. Lessons are completely individualised and catered to your personal needs and level.
These can be conducted individually, in pairs, or in groups, online from wherever you are in the world or face-to-face in the Cardiff-area. Teaching resources are also provided.
Linguistically Sophie is a language platform offering lessons and translation services, along with tips, tricks, and inspiration. It combines the traditional fundamentals of language learning and translation with a non-traditional approach, in order to achieve effective, accurate communication and cultural awareness.
My Story
My love for languages started at an academic level. I received a scholarship to study languages at Cardiff University and later completed a PGCE in language teaching, followed by a Masters in Translation. These academic skills equipped me with indispensable expertise and knowledge, however my linguistic experience goes far further than academia.
Languages have opened doors to countless opportunities along with an inquisitiveness and sense of adventure that have allowed me to live, travel, and work with languages in and around France, Spain, Italy, Australia, Asia, and South America.
This has allowed me to teach French, Spanish, Italian, and English as a foreign language, learn new languages and perfect my current skills, whilst developing an understanding and sensitivity towards different cultures and people. Throughout my career, I have had so much fun with languages and my main objective when teaching is to transfer this to language learners so that you enjoy the process and feel comfortable.if this means you have a glass of wine whilst learning, fine by me.
Whilst much of my experience is international, I have never forgotten my Welsh roots and love teaching and translating the beautiful Welsh language as much as any other. Along with my teaching experience, I have translated between all five languages for various local and international companies, TV shows, and charities.
One very close to my heart is Translators Without Borders, which provides communication tools to those whom need it most, ensuring that every individual has the right to information in their chosen language. Thanks to years of experience, my lessons abandon the traditional parrot-fashion, book-heavy language classes, whilst my translation work focuses as much on culture as it does on language. Lessons and translations are culturally-rich, natural, and interesting yet based on the principle of achieving clarity and accuracy.
I have wanted to launch Linguistically Sophie for so many years. When the pandemic struck, I was compelled to try to do some good. I offered free online language lessons for the lock down period and undertook a course in humanitarian translation in order to broaden my knowledge.
This time opened my eyes to the fact that there are so many people wanting to gain or in need of languages. Conducting work online has offered an exciting, more accessible dimension to the initial idea, meaning that people can acquire a language or translation from their homes, anywhere in the world.

Around 85 million people speak Italian including the 59 million inhabitants of Italy itself and around half a million citizens of Switzerland, where it is one of four official languages. Italian is also spoken in parts of several Balkan countries including Albania, Croatia and Slovenia.
Liverpool Language Academy offers a whole host of language learning opportunities for adults and young people.
Learning a new language is like growing a new head”, a European friend told me long ago. “You see with new eyes, hear with new ears, speak with a new tongue.” Neuroimaging has proved her right. The mental gymnastics of groping for even the simplest words in a different language ignites.
