Makeup artist was not my original life path, I actually went to school for political science in Calgary Alberta. Little did I know that it was only the beginning of a series of fortunate events that lead me to this creative industry. Fast forward to four years ago when my husband and I made the decision to move to Halifax Nova Scotia as a change of pace and scenery.
Once here I applied to get a retail job at one of Canada's leading makeup retailers, only until I figured out what I would be doing here in Halifax, or so I thought. That retail job made me fall in love with all aspects of makeup artistry, from the creative side to the social aspect, it challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and rediscover myself as a creative person.
As I continued to grow creatively I decided to pursue the career fully and enrolled in a local makeup school to become licensed. From there, with the support of my husband, my family, and some fantastic industry professionals I kept growing as an artist. I wouldn't have it any other way, I have fallen for this beautiful province and with the ins and outs of being a freelance makeup artist.
Since then I have been fortunate enough to open my own makeup and lash studio, work as the makeup key in several national films and TV shows, become internationally published, travel this beautiful province with bridal bookings... what a journey! When it comes to inspiration and branding I never stray too far from my roots.
I am originally from Mexico City, Mexico, and I constantly draw creative inspiration from the rich culture my beautiful home country has to offer. I chose the name Maquillaje by Andrea, as a nudge to my roots "maquillaje" (pronounced mah_kee_yah_hae) is the word for makeup in Spanish.
As an artist I am passionate about highlighting each client's unique beauty, I believe in makeup being a form of expression and genuinely connect with everyone who sits in my chair.
Permanent makeup or Micropigmentation is a cosmetic technique that employs tattoos (permanent pigmentation of the dermis) as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as eye lining and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips, and eyelids.
Our Brand New Makeup Artistry Honors Diploma program is now available! If you're looking to do it all and become the ultimate hair & makeup artist for bridal, fashion, photography, runway, TV & Film - this is your ticket.
I rarely see any makeup artists with disabilities, so I wanted to make a change in the makeup community and hopefully be a positive role model for others.
