Course Details

This programme focuses on a topic of student's choice through an independent research project. It is specifically designed to enable students to develop research skills and to undertake independent research while broadening knowledge and understanding in an area of psychology that excites them. 

Students will learn how to research the literature and to plan and manage a research project. The skills and attributes students gain in critical thinking, project management and report writing will help them to achieve their career potential. Core modules in the programme ensure that students are familiar with research methodologies and statistical techniques, which will allow them to perform effective research in various areas of psychology. These modules also aim to improve student's understanding of ethical issues and their ability to answer research questions pertaining to psychology.

The programme also provides an excellent springboard for students wishing to continue their studies through to the PhD level.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 3.00
  • APEL.A
  • An APEL.A Certificate (APEL T-7) (Recognition of Prior Learning) (Click on this link for further information on APEL.A)
  • Other Qualifications
  • Any other qualifications will be considered on a case-to-case basis and subject to the approval and acceptance by University Senate.

English Language Requirements
Any of the following:

  • IELTS 6.0
  • TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 200 (computer-based) or 75 (Internet-based)
  • PTE Academic 50 overall
  • MUET Band 4
  • Cambridge English: First/CEFR 170 (Grade B)/B2
  • Cambridge English: Advanced/CEFR 170 (Grade B)/B2
  • SPM English 11195C

Application Procedure
Initial enquiries should be made to the Programme Coordinator If the potential student is eligible for the programme, they will then meet with the Programme Leader to discuss their area of research interest and potential research supervisors.

Details on the specific documents required to complete the Sunway Postgraduate Application Form will be provided once the student has been assigned a research supervisor and agreement has been reached on the research topic.

Research Proposal

  • The research proposal should comprise between 1,000 and 1,500 words (excluding references), and covers the following structure:
  • An appropriate title for the research project (designated supervisor if known)

Introduction and justification of the study, which includes:

  • Research background
  • Problem statement
  • Research objective(s)
  • Research question(s)/hypothesis
  • Literature review
  • Research methodology
  • Proposed research schedule
