Course description
Lead Partners was introduced in 2012 and allows schools to recruit students onto teacher education courses run in collaboration with universities. To make sure you have a range of placement opportunities, schools work together in Teaching Alliances.
This course is made up of both campus-based sessions - which will give you a grounding in the principles of good teaching practice - and school-based placements giving you the chance to apply your knowledge and experience a wide range of classroom situations.
These placements will be in contrasting schools to give you a broad range of experience - they could be in city, suburban or rural schools, in the independent or state sector.
By the end of the course you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and awarded a University of Leicester PGCE.
The Lead Partners Secondary PGCE is run in partnership with a range of partner schools. You can choose which school you would like to apply for and then submit your application through UCAS.
Each Lead Partners provider school will offer its own unique range of placement experiences and opportunities but will still share most, if not all, the Secondary PGCE Professional Studies Course with the students on our 'core' (University-led) Secondary Education PGCE course, giving you a great opportunity to share experience and practice with other students. Your subject studies will be undertaken together with core PGCE students.
Not sure which PGCE route is right for you? Have a look at our Routes into Teaching pages to find out more about PGCE, Lead Partners and SCITT routes.
Professional Studies Programme
The Professional Studies programme runs throughout the academic year and forms the core of the Secondary PGCE programme. It is compulsory for student teachers from all subject areas.
The Professional Studies programme will introduce you to a wide range of generic professional issues, organised into three strands that run throughout the PGCE year:
Reflective Practice
Career Development
Professional Values
Academic Skills Development
In addition to the compulsory programme, you will have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional sessions. This allows you to tailor your training to meet your own needs as you develop as a teacher. Previous optional sessions have included:
Working with students with Special Education Needs and Disabilities
English as an Additional Language
Technology-Enhanced Learning
We believe in education as a force for good. To make this world a better place by empowering our members to become Citizens of Change. Our origins, over 100 years ago, speak to that very purpose – our founding father Dr Astley Clarke declared:
"Now, every material asset a person possesses may flee; education alone is an asset of which an individual cannot be robbed." We are unique as the only university in Europe founded by its community as a living memorial to those who made sacrifices in the First World War.
In over a century, we have flourished to become a leading research-intensive university providing an inspiring education and student experience, and delivering world-changing research that improves people’s lives. As a comprehensive university, we offer a broad breadth of courses incorporating a spectrum of subjects in a suite of undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs.
Our reputation speaks for itself – we are world-renowned for our discoveries, for advancing the frontiers of knowledge, and for tackling contemporary issues. Our league table standing places us among the leading UK universities. We are value driven – we believe in inclusivity and in breaking down barriers to achievement. Your success is our success. Across different fields of endeavor, we encourage and support our students to be inspiring and to be impactful.
We are based in one of the most diverse cities in the UK and Europe and this has shaped our identity and mission: Diverse in our makeup and united in ambition – we pursue excellence in knowledge and learning to transform our community, our world, and beyond.
