Animation is the process of transforming still images into moving images. Images in traditional animation are hand drawn or painted on transparent celluloid sheets before being photographed and exhibited on film.

The majority of animations today are created using computer-generated imagery (CGI). Computer animation can be very detailed 3D animation, or it can be 2D computer animation (with the look of traditional animation) for stylistic reasons, low bandwidth, or faster real-time renderings.

Other popular animation techniques use a stop motion technique to create two- and three-dimensional objects such as paper cutouts, puppets, or clay figures.
