Course Details

You’ll build the skills needed to research and analyse the political, social, economic and cultural implications of digital technologies and industries, as well as the ability to design and manage the use of digital technologies to solve social problems. When you graduate, you’ll be prepared for professional environments where the production and distribution of digital media content are integral to the workplace.

This specialist course addresses the growing demand for graduates with new and diverse skills in communication, and a critical understanding of how the internet and digital media influences our lives.

The course develops through three themes:

  • A core digital media studies component provides you with a firm grasp of digital communication practice and research. You’ll learn about the workings of social media platforms, how to construct and analyse digital objects such as memes, and how to design and execute a digital media research project.
  • A component that provides a broader grounding in communication and media studies will teach you the key concepts and developments in media studies. This ensures that you’ll graduate with knowledge of how pre-digital and digital media systems are distinct from one another.
  • A professional practice component allows you to apply your knowledge of media systems to real-world situations calling for teamwork, policy design and advanced oral communication skills. You’ll also gain valuable work experience by applying for an internship through our extensive network of industry partners.

You'll complete 24 units (144 credit points) that are divided into the following streams:

  • Eight units (48 credit points) in digital media studies
  • Four units (24 credit points) in fundamentals of communications and media studies
  • Four professional practice units (24 credit points)
  • Eight elective units (48 credit points) - Eight elective units that can be taken from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, or another School on campus.

Your degree will be recognised wherever you want to work or study in the world. Monash University is ranked (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024):

  • No. 23 in the world for Philosophy
  • No. 47 in the world for Communication and Media Studies
  • No. 64 in the world for Arts and Humanities
  • Top 100 in the world for Anthropology, History, Politics and Sociology.
  • Thrive in the digital era- You’ll be part of a new generation of thinkers and future-driven media and communication professionals who’ll challenge convention and devise solutions that’ll take us into the next century.
  • Learn to think critically- You'll be led to develop critical thinking when engaging in a digital environment rife with misinformation. By understanding the particular ways digital content circulates, you'll be able to leverage the possibilities digital environments present for specialties such as corporate communications or crisis communications.
  • Gain transferable skills- You’ll have a thorough grounding in the key employability skills, including agility, lateral thinking and improvisation; skills that surpass automation and are relevant to all careers. You'll also develop written and verbal communication, problem-solving and critical thinking, research and interdisciplinary thinking, leadership and interpersonal skills -– all that will help you keep up with changes in fast-paced digital environments.
  • Hit the ground running- Undertake a digital research project with a non-profit or an internship through our extensive network of industry partners. This is your opportunity to gain valuable work experience, build networks and make contacts for your career development.
  • Free electives- There are eight free electives in the course. That means you’ll have the flexibility to take units from another discipline within Arts and Social Sciences or from another school such as Business or IT. These electives will complement your specialisation and add diversity to your skill set, making you stand out from your peers.

This course equips you with a skill set and knowledge that is future-oriented and adaptable to a wide range of industries, including heavy industries, media industries, service industries, as well as those involving fast-moving consumer goods.
