The course focuses on the overall development of the students, grooming, technical skills, communication skills, body language, and various other aspects that positively enhance their personality, making them confident and outgoing. .
It also provide hands- on-experience on complex technologies that are found in the industry today through a 45 day internship in a fashion industry. It also provides a platform to budding designers to showcase their creations through an annual fashion show “AAKRITI”.This program instills social commitment with entrepreneurial skills to become pioneers in contributing sustainable fashion products.
After the completion of above said course, the student has plethora of opportunities for employment like working for top fashion brands and labels, fashion export houses, textile mills, education and own brand establishment
Profile of the College
Government Home Science College is recognized as one of the premier institutions of higher learning and research in the country. Since its inception in 1961, the college is committed to the sustenance and promotion of an environment, favourable to the growth and development of an academic excellence, satisfying contemporary women’s professional and specialized needs.
Aligning with the objectives of the various developmental schemes initiated by the Government of India such as “Skill India'', “Atamnirbhar Bharat” ‘Indian Skill Development Service’ (ISDS) as well as ‘Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) to nurture the academic institutes as incubation centres for the professional training of the students, the vision and mission of the college is to equip the students with market-relevant skill training.
The rationale is to bridge the gap between skills required by the industry and the skills students acquire during their academic training in the institute.
Home Science is a unique field of knowledge. Its inter-disciplinary approach to synthesize knowledge drawn from physical and biological sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities has enriched its educational programmes. It caters to the present-day requirements of education in order to meet the rapidly changing demands of family life and the multiple roles that woman has to play in home as well as professional life.
The college’s undergraduate, post-graduate, and diploma courses are designed to meet the marketplace’s challenges, demands, and changing technologies. Starting with a three-year degree course in B.Sc. Home Science, it expanded its horizons in the true sense by offering a revamped undergraduate Programme by gearing it towards specialization to make it more skill and career-oriented.
The need-based changes have been introduced in five undergraduate specializations namely Apparel and Textile Design; Dietetics; Human Development; Interior Design and Resource Management and B.Sc. Home Science Composite. The college also offers an undergraduate degree course in Fashion Designing and Master’s degree courses in Clothing and Textiles, Foods and Nutrition and Human Development
The need-based Postgraduate Diplomas in Fashion Designing, Nutrition and Dietetics and Child Guidance and Family Counselling are also other options after graduation. Ph.D. in Home Science is also offered with coursework. These skill-oriented courses provide the requisite industry-relevant skill training and encourage the students for entrepreneurship. After getting the requisite professional training from the institute, some of the students become employment generators rather than employment seekers.
These different areas of specialization also concentrate on providing suitable training to the students for various job opportunities. The trained graduates and postgraduates are absorbed in hospitals, industrial units, hotel industries, and health fitness clubs. They also work as teachers, counsellors, sales managers, apparel & interior designers, consultants and field workers in extension education and community development programmes. Thus, Home Science empowers women at personal, professional, social, entrepreneurial and economic fronts.
Further, COVID-19 pandemic situation did not dampen the spirit of the institution. The faculty members of the college turned this global crisis of COVID-19 into an opportunity and provided much-needed academic and psychological support to the students through online classes, workshops, and seminars and uploaded various informative videos on its YouTube, Facebook and Instagram accounts. Understanding the pulse of the situation, the students along with the faculty members worked as COVID warriors and helped society to cope up with this crisis.
The College also runs a laboratory Nursery School, Chaitanya, with 50 students on rolls, under the Department of Human Development to impart practical training to its students. The other major departments of Home Science are also having well-equipped State-of-the-Art laboratories.
The beautiful spacious college and hostel buildings offer a peaceful, serene yet stimulating environment to the students. The campus is endowed with well-manicured lawns, spacious lecture theatres, smart classrooms and laboratories which makes the workplace more conducive and eco-friendly for the teachers as well as students. The college has rich indoor and outdoor sports and fitness facilities which cater to students of all aptitudes and abilities.
The faculty comprises of highly qualified and experienced members, instrumental in imparting a high standard of education to its students. The faculty also participates in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops. They are also contributing in various technical and professional bodies related to Home Science.
Aligning with the changing infrastructural and technological requirements of the global market, the college has consistently upgraded its existing laboratories and infrastructural facilities. RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) Grant of two crore rupees became instrumental in providing a major facelift to college by helping in the construction, renovation and upgradation of the existing facilities.
The renovation included upgrading the library, committee room, pantry, e-Pathshala, conference room, and the flooring of the first and second-floor circulation areas. Under this grant, the process of making the existing kitchen in the hostel mess as the modular one is under process and likely to be completed soon. In order to advocate and promote,Central Government scheme of ‘Fit India’, an Outdoor Gym has also been provided to improve the physical and mental well-being of the students.
With the help of RUSA Infrastructure as well as State Grant of Rs. 1.34 crore, the college has come up with a New Multi-Media Research Block to promote research-oriented activities among Graduate, Post-graduate and Doctorate students.
In anticipation of the changing environment and also the changing skill sets of professionals in modern industries, the curriculum is continuously revised to make it more relevant, holistic, contextual and specialized. The college offers facilities for academic excellence, cultural enrichment and physical fitness of the students to build a multifaceted personality and prepares them to face the challenges that lie ahead.

Over the years, the college has built up great credibility and gained recognition as a premier institute. National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) has evaluated the college on the basis of Teaching Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception.
The College topped amongst city colleges in NIRF Ranking fourth time in a row at the National Level. It has been successful in attaining its position in the top 100 institutes of India consecutively for the last three years. This year, the college took a massive jump and figured among the top 50 institutes of India. It has significantly improved its ranking from 78th in 2021 to 46th spot in 2022 in India Rankings 2022 by NIRF, MoE, Government of India 2022.
