The Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) is a 10 week (428 hour) course beginning on a Friday with Day 0 for orientation and overview. The course meets or exceeds the standards in NFPA 1001 (current), as well as NFPA 1072 (current).
The Basic Firefighter Training Course (BFTC) is a 10 week (428 hour) course beginning on a Friday with Day 0 for orientation and overview. The course meets or exceeds the standards in NFPA 1001 (current), as well as NFPA 1072 (current).
The students will be tested mentally and physically in stages throughout the course delivery to ensure competence and ability at the various levels of basic firefighting.
During the course, testing will include weekly written tests administered by the Georgia Fire Academy Division. Practical skill performance and evaluation will occur throughout the course to ensure competency in job performance capabilities necessary culminating in a 24 hour drill exercise.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have achieved Firefighter I, HAZMAT Awareness and Operations, Structural Fire Control, and Interior Search and Rescue.
Welcome to the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC), the state’s premier training facility for all state and local public safety-related units of government including police officers, firefighters, 911 operators, coroners, emergency management officers, rescue officers, jail officers and other emergency service personnel.
Established in 1980, GPSTC has been training the public safety community longer than any other institution in Georgia. GPSTC’s training divisions include: the Georgia Police Academy, the Georgia Fire Academy.
The Basic Training Division and the Instructional Services Division, which are the state’s leading providers of certified basic, advanced and specialized training for public safety officials.
GPSTC’s main campus encompasses nearly 1,000 acres and is centrally located just off I-75 in Forsyth, Georgia (Monroe County). The comprehensive training complex includes many state-of-the-art facilities designed to give students both classroom experience and real world skills.
Under the leadership of Director C.G. Wigginton, GPSTC employs the best and brightest. Full-time and adjunct instructors at GPSTC are the foremost authorities in their respective fields with the experience necessary to design and deliver superior training programs to a range of public.
Safety officers—from those just beginning their career, to seasoned professionals seeking specialized and advanced instruction, or those looking to progress into executive, supervisory or management positions.
In addition to GPSTC’s training divisions and administrative offices, the training units of six resident agencies are located within the main academic complex. Those agencies include: Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Georgia State Patrol (GSP), Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Department of Community Supervision (DCS), Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA). The Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division, the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council and the Al Burruss Correctional Training Center are also located onsite.
Protection From Fire training is offered by Portland State University. Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) supports the PSU community by providing a safe and healthy University environment.
In the fast paced foodservice industry, it is important that your staff be properly trained in the operation of your kitchen fire suppression system, fire extinguishers and proper procedures in case of fire.
The fire brigade personnel are members of the building staff or employees of occupants of the building that are trained to take certain actions during a fire emergency. These actions include controlling the evacuation of their area of assignment, confining the fire if possible.
The course provides an overview of the dangers associated with fires and other emergencies that can occur in the work place. Participants will understand the benefits of having and following an emergency action plan, be able to identify hazards that create the need to evacuate or find shelter.
