This half-day course is designed for anyone needing to know how to maintain life until the ambulance arrives. This includes how to manage an airway by placing the casualty into the recovery position, how to carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation, how to deal with choking and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator safely. The course looks at the age ranges from adults to babies.
The qualification only last for one year and is ideal for professionals needing to undertake their yearly basic life support assessments.

Syllabus
The Basic Life Support training course covers the range of adults, children and babies for the following topics
Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
Know how to safely use an automated external defibrillator
Be able to deal with someone who is choking
Delivery Style
The Basic Life Support training course will include a variety of interactive sessions including discussions, group break-out activities and practical scenarios with a variety of first aid equipment. All of these elements will build the candidates' knowledge to help them pass the assessments and to build their confidence to provide first aid.
The practical scenarios will include recovery position, resuscitation and the use of Automated External Defibrillators. All candidates need to be physically able to take part in these scenarios with many of them taking place on the floor.
Candidates should wear clothing that they feel comfortable with to support their learning while taking part in group discussions and practical sessions with other candidates.
Candidates should be aware they will be practising placing one another in the recovery position and practising resuscitation. We, therefore, recommend flat shoes, and trousers and to be cautious of baggy low tops.
Assessment
The candidates will be observered through the day to ensure they are understanding the content and can deliver the first aid skills.
The candidates will need to be able to demonstrate three key skills in order to get a certificate. This includes:
Placing someone safely in recovery position
Carrying out effective CPR
Safely using an AED
Dealing with choking casualty
Certification
Successful candidates will be issued with a certificate in Basic Life Support by Dewi Development Ltd.
Renewal
The qualification lasts for 3 years and can be renewed by sitting a Basic Life Support course before the qualification expires.
