Also outlined are workplace safety; the use of measuring equipment; hand, machine and power tools; gas cutting practices; the interpretation of engineering drawings and the design and manufacturing of basic steel objects.

Course Content:

  • Workplace safety
    • We explain to learners the hazards and risks, housekeeping, stacking, colour coding, hand and portable tools, symbolic safety signs, lifting equipment, ladders, scaffolds, machine guarding, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), types of PPE, confined space, hot work, lockout systems and conveyors.
  • Hand tools
    • We take learners through the tools and equipment needed: hammers, chisels, hacksaws, spanners, wrenches, pliers, clamps, punches, letter stamps, files, scribers, steel squares, straightedges and wire brushes.
  • Power and machine tools
    • We outline the use of drills, drill presses, grinders and angle grinders.
  • Measuring equipment
    • We outline the use of tape measures, rulers, protractors, bevel protractors, combination squares, callipers and micrometres.
  • Drawings
    • We explain the common features, line styles and types, multiple views and projections including orthographic, auxiliary, isometric, oblique projections and perspective, section views, scale, showing dimensions, technical lettering and examples of engineering drawings, abbreviations and symbols.
  • Plasma / oxy-fuel cutting
    • We discuss oxy-fuel cutting, apparatus, regulators, gas hoses, non-return valves, check valves, torches (welding, cutting and heating torches), fuels (acetylene, hydrogen, MPS and MAPP gas), the role of oxygen, types of flame, cutting, safety, eye protection, fuel leakage, cylinders and flashback.
  • Basic principles and practice of welding and knowledge on how to use welding safely
    • We talk about the processes including arc welding and power supplies, as well as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)/tungsten inert gas (TIG), gas welding, resistance (spot) welding, geometry of a weld, quality of a weld, heat-affected zones and safety issues.
  • How to use welding equipment correctly and the correct method of welding joints
    • We explain welding procedure specifications, welding symbols, the fillet weld, groove welding, stick welding, better restarts and SMAW troubleshooting.
  • Boilermaking
    • We discuss properties of metals, marking out (typical marking out tools), welding, sheet metal and special tools.
