Course Outline
Operating a bucket truck can be dangerous, and it’s important to take precautions to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Here are some tips for operating a bucket truck in Ontario:
Perform a pre-operation inspection: Before using the bucket truck, inspect it for any damage or defects. Check the brakes, tires, hydraulic system, and other components to ensure that they are in good working order.
Wear personal protective equipment (PPE): Always wear PPE, such as a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and high-visibility clothing, when operating the bucket truck. This will protect you from falling objects, electrical hazards, and other hazards.
Follow traffic laws: When driving the bucket truck on public roads, follow all traffic laws, including speed limits, stop signs, and other traffic signals.
Use the bucket properly: When using the bucket, ensure that it is fully extended and locked in place before entering it. Use the safety harness and other safety equipment provided by the manufacturer, and never exceed the load capacity of the bucket.
Stay clear of power lines: When operating the bucket truck near power lines, maintain a safe distance of at least 3 meters (10 feet) and ensure that the boom and bucket are properly grounded.
Avoid unstable ground: Never operate the bucket truck on unstable ground, such as soft soil or steep slopes. Always use outriggers or stabilizers to ensure stability.
Follow safety protocols: Follow all safety protocols and procedures established by your employer or the equipment manufacturer. If you are uncertain about the safety of a task, seek guidance from a supervisor or qualified expert.
Use a spotter: When backing up or maneuvering the bucket truck in tight spaces, use a spotter to help guide you and alert you to any hazards.
Maintain the equipment: Regularly maintain the bucket truck to ensure that it remains in good working order. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance and inspection intervals.
By following these tips, you can operate a bucket truck safely in Ontario and minimize the risk of accidents and injuries.

Bucket Truck
A bucket truck is used for lifting and lowering workers to places that are too tall for ladders
Some are designed with a single or double arm boom
Can be constructed of wood, fiberglass, metal or reinforced plastic
This is considered a mobile type of aerial lift as it has an aerial device attached to a truck. Made with fiberglass or steel platform (bucket), the aerial mechanism is locked to a hydraulic or electric lifting system (this includes a rotating turret and lifting arms). Bucket Truck operators are required to be trained in fall protection safety as workers can be lifted to increased heights and a safety harness must be worn at all times.
Scissor Lift
Also known as an aerial work platform, elevating work platform or mobile elevating work platform
Generally used for general maintenance
