The CCNA exam is the composite exam associated with the CCNA Routing and Switching certification. One must have working knowledge of TCP/IP protocol Suite IPX/SPX protocols Suite, MCSE or CNE or experienced in supporting a LAN environment to be eligible for CCNA. After obtaining a CCNA, one may choose to progress to CCNP.

This exam tests a candidate's knowledge and skills required to install, operate, and troubleshoot a small to medium size enterprise branch network. The topics include connecting to a WAN; implementing network security; network types; network media; routing and switching fundamentals; the TCP/IP and OSI models; IP addressing; WAN technologies; operating and configuring IOS devices; extending switched networks with VLANs; determining IP routes; managing IP traffic with access lists; establishing point-to-point connections; and establishing Frame Relay connections.
Participants shall have the option of gaining the certification by passing two tests (ICND1 640-822 and ICND2 640-816), or one single test (CCNA 640-802). The certification is valid for three years; after which the CCNA holder must either take and pass an exam for one of the Professional (e.g. Cisco Certified Network Professional-CCNP) or Specialist level certifications (excluding the sales specialist exams), or pass the (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert-CCIE) written exam.
