On this course, you will:
Learn how to structure your story and scenes
Create characters your readers engage with
Receive clear, in-depth explanations with lots of examples from published fiction
Build your story and submit extracts for comment on a bi-weekly basis
Participate in friendly feedback groups and apply your critical and editorial skills to your own work
Receive verbal and written feedback, insightful critique, and encouragement from the tutor
Course Programme:
Weeks alternate between feedback sessions and the study of published texts with exercises that address craft issues that arise from the feedback sessions.
Help ranges from ways to develop rich, evocative narrative to getting to grips with structure and making characters palpable, scenes immersive and dialogue moving. Examples of some of what is covered:

Close reading of published literature gives us valuable insight into methods and choices in terms of language structure, subject matter, personal revelation, the relationship which is created between the writer and the reader among many other aspects.
Advice will be given on how to read to inform your writing, and what to look out for.
Meet Samantha Forrest
Samantha Forrest is a writer and teacher of creative writing, based in Bristol, in the south-west of England. She has facilitated hundreds of workshops, helping people move their projects forward and take pleasure in their learning.
She has written since she was a young teenager.
Her work covers poetry, theatre, fiction, including stories for children, and creative non-fiction. She has performed her work at open mic events and poetry slams and had stories and essays published in a variety of UK magazines.
She is currently working on an inspirational biography alongside a novel for children.
Teaching has been part of her life since she was 16. She trained in the Visual Arts and Theatre in Paris and London, before undertaking a PGCE at Cambridge University.
She has worked with all ages and abilities, in a wide variety of settings, including primary and secondary schools, museums, self-help centres, and on the road as a tour guide throughout western Europe. She particularly enjoys sharing her love for the arts, and encouraging creativity.
She has a sensitive and fun-loving approach to teaching, whilst taking the subject seriously, and likes to create a supportive atmosphere, with lots of laughter too.
This is a course for learners who are comfortable with reading/sharing their written work to gain feedback from their peers and tutor. Your tutor will suggest suitable creative writing books on your first session.
Many authors take their own life experience as a starting point for works of fiction. In this discursive course we will be looking at how memory and imagination can work together across a variety of genres to create engaging stories.

Allow your free creative self to safely explore through the written word
This course is suitable for beginners and for those with some writing experience who want to study creative writing for leisure. Previous learners will be given the opportunity to stretch their writing skills, while people new to creative writing classes will be gently brought up to speed.
