This course will cover the tools writers use to write fiction, in either long or short form. We will begin by developing a character to be central to a piece of fiction. From there we will go on to workshop story, tone and setting.
We will also examine the use of point of view, structure and voice. By the end of the weekend participants should be well on the way to possessing the necessary tools to write a compelling short story or novel.

Selwyn Community Education is a community education centre based at Selwyn College, Kohimarama, Auckland. Each year we offer a wide range of more than 750 evening and weekend courses, plus some daytime English for Migrants courses.

During school term time, our office is open 9am - 9pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Thursdays and Fridays, we are open 9am - 3pm. Once a month we are open for a weekend programme of courses. During school holidays we are open for limited hours.
The Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy Course gives you all the writing techniques required to write credible, compelling speculative fiction. Practise your skills in 12 writing assignments, with feedback on each from award-winning author, Sonny Whitelaw.
Whether you want to write the great Kiwi novel or write children tales, there are some fundamental building blocks that all aspiring writers need to know. Come along to learn the fundamentals of plotting, writing great characters and some of the essential nuts and bolts of creative writing.
Improve your reading, writing and spelling for employment or further study with this free daytime or evening course. Please note that you must be a fluent speaker of English to attend this course. Enrolments may be accepted after the start date, if places are still available.
