Course Overview
You study a diverse range of fiction and narrative non-fiction by acclaimed contemporary writers, which allows you to explore different styles and genres including fantasy, crime, historical fiction and literary fiction and gain a critical foundation for your own writing while increasing your knowledge of the publishing world.
Throughout the course, you create new work and discuss it in a supportive group of peers alongside your tutor as you redraft and refine. The structure of the programme enables you to experiment from week to week, hone your craft and develop complete short stories as well as engage with the demands of longer-form prose.
In the first semester you will take modules in contemporary fiction and literary non-fiction, and also develop a project that addresses ways in which writers engage with community audiences.
The second semester focuses on genre fiction and preparation for your Independent Study project, which is a substantial creative submission of 20-25,000 words written over the summer months.
This could be the first part of a novel, a collection of short fiction, the opening to a work of literary non-fiction or a hybrid submission, completed with tutor support.

Our History
We are proud of our heritage with over 175 years of values-driven excellence
Writing is everywhere. From the films we watch, the TV we stream and the books we read, to the social media posts we write, the marketing pitches that surround us and the news stories we receive across print and digital formats. Increasingly too, that writing is not produced by people, but by AI.
On this course we’ll help you to enhance your skills as a creative writer and gain experience of writing in a wide range of different styles and genres.
Develop proficiency in various writing techniques, including character development, plot construction, and dialogue, through hands-on exercises and feedback. Cultivate a unique writing voice and style by experimenting with different genres, tones, and narrative perspectives.
This course is for anyone with a basic understanding of creative writing or that has completed one of our introductory courses, going deeper into the details of storytelling and narrative techniques over a 10-week period.
This workshop is about how we can use art to engage with community activity. Participants will experiment with a variety of artistic materials to explore ideas in an open, relaxed environment.
