What is Defensive Driving?
Many occupations require employees to operate vehicles (transporting goods or commuting) and traffic crashes are the leading cause of traumatic workplace deaths in BC.
This course educates drivers about defensive driving practices which can improve road safety and help avoid accidents., reducing workplace injuries.
Learning Objectives & Specific Outcomes:
Defensive driving is a one-day in-class course that focuses on improving driver attitudes and road strategies. Trainees learn how to manage frustration, replacing road rage with effective responses that don’t put lives at risk.
They learn the five tenets of defensive driving (Think & Look Ahead; Anticipate Hazards; Keep Options Open; Manage Risk; and Maintain Control) and what those tenets mean in practice.
Drivers learn how to avoid collisions by maintaining a safe following distance and leaving escape routes; they learn effective strategies for safe driving in heavy traffic, driving at night and driving in adverse weather conditions; they learn how to plan routes to reduce time on the road and the need to drive in unfamiliar areas.
Finally, drivers learn how to identify and correct distracted driving behaviour and how to maintain vigilance and quick reactions at all times.
