What's Covered?
Equivalent to three A Levels, you will develop comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Tourism and Events industry as you gain insight into cruise operations, hospitality and events, resort management, sustainable tourism and much more.
You will also deepen your understanding of key business concepts such as marketing, human resources and customer service - all of which will enable you to either enter employment within the Travel and Tourism industry or progress to higher education or an apprenticeship.
Some of the exciting units you will cover include: The World of Travel and Tourism, Global Destinations, Managing the Customer Experience in Travel and Tourism, Principles of Marketing Travel and Tourism and Travel & Tourism Enterprises.
Specialist units may also include: Researching Current Travel Trends and Key Issues in Travel and Tourism, The UK as a Tourist Destination, Sustainable Tourism, Working Overseas, Events, Conferences and Exhibitions and Work Experience in Travel and Tourism.
Entry requirements?
You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above, or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Travel and Tourism at a Merit or above standard plus Maths &/or English at grade 4 or above.
If you do not have these qualifications and are keen to join the course, we will be happy to consider and advise you individually. If progressing from a Level 2 vocational qualification, we would ideally expect you to have achieved a Level 2 English or Maths qualification or be able to demonstrate competence at this level.
How is it assessed?
You are continuously assessed throughout the course. 20% external assessment (where one unit is assessed by a written exam and one unit assessed by a task set by the awarding body and completed under supervised conditions). 80% internally assessed coursework.
13 units in total. For each unit national standards are laid down, in which you have to show you are competent. Your tutors ensure that you are given opportunities to do this through projects, assignments, case studies and problem-solving situations.
You are required to sit one external exam, and complete two timed tasks that are externally assessed by the exam board.
What can I do next?
The course gives you the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in one of many areas within the Tourism & Events industry such as travel agency work, business travel, holiday reps, tour guides, events management, and working for the local council or tourist boards. It also qualifies you to progress to Higher Education at Higher National Diploma/Certificate or Degree Level.
What financial support is on offer?
This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a gross household income under £30,000 can receive financial support to cover college related costs such as transport, meals, course equipment and uniform.
Bursary support is based on individual circumstances and will be allocated to best suit your individual needs. A range of other financial support is available depending on your personal circumstances.
