Hosted by SVA's MFA Fine Arts Department, this internationally renowned program offers artists an opportunity to work intensively in a private studio and receive individual critiques from faculty selected for their diversity, professional achievement and critical engagement.
Artists are supported in their painting, drawing, printmaking, installation and mixed-media work, and are encouraged to push their practice to the next level, aesthetically and conceptually.
Attention is given to contextualizing resident artists' work within contemporary interdisciplinary discourse.
Each artist has exclusive use of a studio throughout the program. Located in Chelsea, the studios offer privacy, while supporting a community that encourages experimentation and the development of new ideas and directions.
Faculty will conduct studio visits and discuss each participant's work on an individual basis. Exposure to the New York City art world complements the on-site residency program.
Equally important to the faculty critiques are the special lectures, scheduled approximately once a week. Given by guest artists, critics and gallery directors, these dialogues are designed to offer further insight into the realities of the working artist. Gallery tours are also included.
With a faculty of distinguished working professionals, dynamic curriculum and an emphasis on critical thinking, SVA is a catalyst for innovation and social responsibility.
