Description

The Gas Test Atmospheres training will teach the participant how to test the working atmosphere, use electronic test apparatus & to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.Participants will learn to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

Working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. Workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.

The knowledge & skills gained can be applied in the following situations:

  • confined spaces
  • enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
  • hot work
  • storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
  • testing as part of issuing a work permit
  • monitoring as part of working under a work permit
  • open areas
  • holding the gas tester by hand
  • lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.

 

Course Topics

  • Find out type of gas/atmosphere to be tested
  • Select and calibrate equipment in accordance with procedures
  • Find out gas testing regime/sampling pattern required
  • Identify hazards from possible atmosphere contaminants
  • Implement hazard control measures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Test gas
  • Use gas testing equipment to test gas as required
  • Interpret and report readings
  • Monitor gas on an ongoing basis as required.
  • Take required action if readings are unacceptable
  • Communicate required actions to be taken to appropriate personnel
  • Maintain equipment
  • Clean and maintain gas testing equipment in accordance with procedures
  • Inspect and fault-find monitoring equipment in accordance with procedures
  • Return gas testing equipment to required location and in required condition
  • Maintain records of tests and results in accordance with procedures

 

Participants will need to:

  • Wear comfortable clothing & enclosed footwear.
  • Bring your own food, Free water, tea, coffee & biscuits are provided.
  • Remember to bring your photo identification with you to the training as stated in the prerequisites for the course
  • inform us upon registration If you feel you have any literacy or numeracy difficulties. Some reasonable adjustments to the course can be made to assist

 

Licence & Assessment Information

  • Participants will be required to complete a series of workplace assessment tasks to demonstrate industry skills and knowledge described in the units of competency included in this course.

The assessment will include:

  •  Demonstration of relevant knowledge through conversation practical and oral/ written assessment

  • Upon satisfactory completion of this course, participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment, recognised within the Australian Qualifications Framework and issued under authority of the National Vocational Education and Regulator Act 2011.

 

Prerequisites

To undertake this course participants will need:

  • To be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • A (USI)-Unique Student Identifie
  • To demonstrate the ability to speak and write English to a basic level & have basic numeracy skills
  • Photo identification (drivers licence, passport or proof of age card)
