The short course in GIS Professional Practice covers the guidelines for professional practice as prescribed by the South African Council for Professional Land and Technical Surveyors (PLATO).

During the course, you will gain a better understanding of all facets pertinent to professional practice in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) industry.

The course covers a range of topics, including professionalism, professional ethics and practices, social responsibility, partnerships, client relationships, PLATO legislation and rules, relevant legislation (Promotion of Access to Information Act of 2000 and the Spatial Data Infrastructure Act of 2003) and the role of international associations and societies in geomatics.

 

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing the course, you will be able to:

  •     discuss the meaning of GISc, a profession and the GISc as a profession critically discuss the pros and cons of GISc as a profession, with particular reference to South Africa
  •     critically discuss the professional and ethical issues relevant to GISc within and between organisations
  •     discuss the role of international societies and associations in geomatics and their relevance to GISc business in South Africa
  •     interpret the legislation specified by the South African Geomatics Council for GISc practitioners in the law exam syllabus.

This programme is presented during the second semester with two compulsory workshops of at least 25 contact hours in total. Delegates who pass the six assignments and the three-hour written exam will receive a certificate of successful completion from the University of Pretoria.
