Design is the art of making ideas visible. It’s everywhere. It’s for everyone. It can change the world. The UArts Graphic Design program prepares graduates to make an impact through a wide variety of careers, including publication design, branding, augmented and virtual reality, motion graphics, and more.
We believe that a combination of critical thinking, design history, fundamental principles, making things, individual voice, and curiosity results in the best designers ever. A degree from University of the Arts prepares graduates for direct entry into professional design practice.
The Graphic Design program awards a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree that is substantially more intensive than a Bachelor of Arts degree. Our students become fluent in multiple areas of practice, then lean toward areas of personal interest. Or as we like to say: UArts graphic designers are generalists with a specialty.
Each year’s required program courses step up in complexity and scope, to challenge students as they stretch and grow. Business skills are incorporated into the School of Design curriculum, beginning in First Year Core.
Critical Studies and design history classes support studio work by enriching artistic practices and professional development; encouraging curiosity; and deepening communication, research and collaboration abilities.
The program is cross-disciplinary and fosters collaboration with other programs at the university, as well as local arts organizations, nonprofits and social agencies.
For more than 145 years, we’ve been developing innovative creative leaders – because we see you differently. It’s true that our top-level faculty provides a rigorous arts, design or writing education; but to be honest, so do most art schools.
UArts is much more: we’re the only arts school in America that makes it possible to work and collaborate across traditional boundaries. 20 minors are open to all students, so animators can study guitar, dancers can minor in photography, creative writers can take classes in illustration.
Innovative Education For 145 Years.
Established in 1876, the university was formed by the merging of two century-old institutions: Philadelphia College of Art and Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts. After being granted university status in 1987,
The University of the Arts became the largest institution of its kind in the nation, offering programs in design, fine arts, media arts, crafts, music, dance, theater and writing.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with a concentration in Graphic Design is a professional 122-hour advanced undergraduate curriculum.
The Graphic Design program provides a balance of theory and practice in a rigorous design curriculum, enhanced by general education coursework in the humanities and the physical and social sciences.
We expand the boundaries of traditional graphic design, rooting students in a vital understanding of the relationship between medium and message. This area of study prepares you for the broadest possibilities and most challenging engagements in today’s creative industries.
The profession of the graphic designer consists of projects that involve graphic design and visual identity: complete visual projects that include symbols, logos, trademarks, visual- identity systems, equipment and orientation, packaging, signage, and general information.
Our required courses and electives will help you build skills in design thinking, digital and hand drawing, color theory, typography, web design, data visualization, and more.
