Course Details

Learners accredited with this unit standard, namely handling hazardous chemical substances (Hazmat) will, on completion of the training course, be able to monitor, advise and report on the scope and understanding of the specified requirements regarding hazardous substances in the workplace. 

Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to the application of methods in preventing exposure to Hazmat and demonstrate knowledge of the classification, physical state, health effects and disposal methods of Hazmat in the workplace.

 


Course Content:

  • Know the hazardous chemical substance
    • In this module, we go through hazardous material classifications, the various matter states in which they are typically present, physiochemical classification and the various health risks they pose.
  • Entry routes of hazardous chemical substances
    • This module focuses on the various ways harmful chemical substances can enter the body, and thus how to prevent them. Such includes inhalation, ingestion, skin absorption and open wounds.
  • Identification of hazardous chemical substances
    • We show learners the symbols, labelling and Material Safety Data Sheet of hazardous chemical substances.
  • Control of exposure to HCS
    • Learners are familiarised with the identification, evaluation and control of exposure to hazardous chemical substance.
  • Legislation
    • This module deals with the duties and responsibilities of employers, the duty to inform, duty of employees, duty to not interfere with, damage or misuse things, the prohibition of certain deductions, how to report to an inspector regarding certain incidents, forbidden victimization, acts or omissions by employees or mandatories, penalties, hazardous chemical substances regulations and disposal of HCS.
