This three-day, 24-hour course is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge and techniques required 1) for personnel responding proactively to hazardous material spills in an industrial setting, and 2) by OSHA for demonstrated competency at the Hazmat Technician Level under 29 CFR 1910.120 (q) (6)(iii).
The class will emphasize how to recognize the threats that first responders and industrial emergency response teams, and environmental professionals may encounter from releases of hazardous materials, chemical spills, fires, explosions, and man-made and natural disasters.
Instruction on how to properly respond to these situations in an industrial setting will be provided. This program covers the basic concepts of response plan preparation, incident recognition and response through classroom instruction and hands-on exercises. Students will be given the opportunity to further enhance their skills and newly acquired knowledge through a simulated spill conducted under realistic conditions.
A mandatory exam is conducted at the end of the program and a special numbered certificate reflecting demonstrated competency at the 24-Hour Hazmat Technician Level Emergency Responder is issued to those who complete the course and pass the exam.
Simulation Exercises
Using the Incident Command System/National Incident Management System, each class will organize itself into an emergency response team and respond to one simulated, though realistic, spill incident.
