Course Details

The purpose of this course is to give first responders a basic understanding of the importance of safety controls and procedures when dealing with dangerous goods and to explain their own role in the event of an emergency involving these materials.

When it comes to hazardous chemical substances, it is important and required by law that employees are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained, with regards to the potential risks to health caused by exposure. Early discovery, hazmat awareness training and correct procedures for alerting the emergency services will mitigate potential danger, injury and death in the event of an incident.

The course gives the learner an appreciation of different systems used in the classification of hazardous materials including the importance of material handling data sheets. It covers safety controls and important procedures for managing an emergency involving hazardous materials.

  •   Handling emergencies involving hazardous materials
  •   The effects of hazardous materials on the body
  •   Ways that hazardous materials enter the body
  •   Physical signs and symptoms of hazmat contamination
  •   Personal protective equipment
  •   First aid for victims
  •   Decontamination procedures
  •   Identifying Hazardous Chemical Substances and using the emergency response guidebook.
