Comfortable life and many industries need heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. In this course, we will explore the fundamentals HVAC systems. HVAC systems generally have common basic elements, although they may differ dramatically in physical appearance and arrangement.

The first topic in this course is the introduction of air conditioning systems, air conditioning process as well as the understanding of psychrometrics, which deals with the properties of moist air, the presentation of air conditioning processes in the psychrometric chart.

Secondly, the design of an HVAC system is dependent on a good estimate of the heat gain or loss in a space to be conditioned, as such, various methods for space cooling load calculation will be discussed. Following the determination of space cooling load requirement, various air distribution systems and calculation of power requirement of fans will be presented for the selection of appropriate fan system.

Lastly, it is often desirable to understand the typical control methods of HVAC system, and the codes  and  industrial  standards  related  to  HVAC system.

A summary of the topics covered in this module include:

  • Introduction to air-conditioning systems

  • Psychrometry and air-conditioning processes

  • CLTD/SCL/CLF Method for space cooling load calculation

  • Fans and air distribution systems

  • HVAC system and control methods

What You Will Learn

  • Perform psychrometric calculations, and understand heat and moisture transport in air- conditioning processes and cycles

  • Analyse heat losses due to cooling zones

  • Analyse the performance of HVAC air side system

  • Compute the power requirement of the fans in HVAC under constant air volume & various air volume (CAV and VAV)

  • Discuss various control methods in HVAC system

  • Central Branch
