What is IELTS?

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure the ability of effective communication across four major language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The test is conducted by British Council and IDP Australia at select centers in India and abroad.

IELTS is required to be taken by those planning to undertake academic courses in UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada, by medical professionals planning to work or study in UK, Australia and USA and those emigrating to any of these countries.

IELTS is offered in two modules – General Training and Academic. The Academic module is meant for those targeting academic courses while the General Training or GT module as it is popularly known is for those planning emigration or taking up a job overseas.

How is IELTS Scored?

Each section i.e. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking is marked individually on a band scale of 1-9 and the average of all the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking)  is taken to give the overall score. The score for each section of the test is equally weighted and your overall band score is rounded off to the nearest whole or half band. 

Let’s take an example: If you get 6.5 in Listening, 6.5 in Reading, 5.5 in Writing and 7.0 in Speaking. Then your total score is 25.5. If we divide this by 4 then the average will be 6.375. This score will be rounded to the nearest half and you will be awarded an Overall Band Score of 6.5

How is IELTS Score reporting done?

• The scores are declared in 13 days and are available on the website of British Council and IDP and can be accessed through the candidate login section. The scorecard is mailed to the candidate within 15 days and the scores are valid for a period of 2 years from the date of the test.

How can I complete IELTS Test Registration?

• Registration for IELTS can be done online at British Council website www.examinations.britishcouncil.org or IDP website www.idpieltsindia.com by filling in the IELTS application form and uploading the required documents. The payment can be made either by credit card or at select branches of ICICI Bank. The examination fee for Paper based IELTS & Computer-delivered IELTS is INR 14,700. Test takers can also register for IELTS through Eduken Office as we are authorized Test Registration Partners of both British Council and IDP.

For how long IELTS score is valid?

• IELTS scores are valid for a period of TWO years from the date of the test.

Recent Updates on IELTS Test:

British Council, IDP and Cambridge ESOL – joint owners of IELTS worldwide, announce changes in the test from time to time. Some of the recent changes announced by them are:

• From April 2021, IELTS test fee has been revised to INR 14,700 from INR 14,000.

• IELTS Score Card (Test Report Form) is not coming in print these days due to Covid19 situation. Students are getting e-TRF (digital score card) for their result mostly after 3 weeks of the test. The validity of your IELTS scorecard will start from the day of your exam.
