It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency,from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

An IELTS result or Test Report Form is issued to all test takers with a score from "band 1" ("non-user") to "band 9" ("expert user") and each institution sets a different threshold. There is also a "band 0" score for those who did not attempt the test.
There are a number of variables affecting the length of time over which an IELTS score remains valid. In general, the result is valid for 2 years. It's a globally recognized exam.
