Course Details

This training is designed for mental health professionals and clinicians (e. G. , psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors) who have had introductory exposure to dbt through either a 2-day dbt introductory skills training workshop or other training avenues. 

The training will include reviews of selected topics in the introductory DBT workshop (e.g., biosocial model, foundations of DBT) as well as new topics, some of which are listed below. Ultimately, the trainers’ goal is to support the development of DBT consultation teams in Malaysia.

  • Getting Started:  The Commitment Session – Function, Goals & Strategies
  • Structuring DBT Treatment: Treatment Functions, Modes & Secondary Targets
  • Suicide Assessment & Suicide Imminent Risk Protocol  
  • Cognitive Modification
  • Validation Strategies
  • Dialectical and Case Management Strategies
  • Applying Cognitive-Behavioral Principles, Procedures & Strategies through DBT
  • Practice using Behavioral Chain Analysis and Solution Analysis with Practice Case
  • Addressing Typical Obstacles to Diary Card use
  • Running an effective DBT Skills Training Group   
  • Treating In-Session Dysfunctional Behaviors   
  • Building a DBT Consultation Team

Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the essential components of the core modes of DBT (e.g., individual psychotherapy, group skills training, telephone coaching, consultation team)
  • Describe the patients for whom DBT is effective and identify the most important components of DBT given recent scientific findings
  • List and describe the rationale for treatment targets in Stage I DBT
  • Identify and teach selected DBT skills across the four core modules
  • Identify the components of a behavioral chain analysis
  • Describe six levels of validation and function of validation strategies
  • Describe the primary dialectic in DBT and how dialectics are applied in DBT
  • Understand core components, principles and functions of a DBT consultation team

Prerequisites for participation

  • The training is designed for mental health professionals, clinicians, and trainees (e.g., psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors) who have had introductory exposure to DBT through either a 2-day DBT introductory skills training workshop or other training avenues (e.g., Psychwire). To derive the greatest benefit, we encourage participants to review the content taught in the 2-day DBT skills training workshop as well as Marsha Linehan’s DBT Skills Training Manual prior to attending the workshop.
