Our History
Mairangi Arts Centre is housed in the old Mairangi War Memorial Hall built in 1953. It was built by local people from whatever they could acquire. Much of the material came from the wharves including the original Tawa floor which is still used today.
From 1972, it was used for many years as the headquarters for the East Coast Bays Football club.
Mairangi Arts Centre (MAC) was initiated after a group of East Coast Bays residents saw the need for an arts centre in their area. After more than ten years of fundraising, the centre was opened in May 1991. Following an extensive refurbishment it was transformed into a light and spacious environment which has been maintained ever since.
oday MAC is one of Auckland’s oldest and largest community art centres employing over 25 tutors and servicing a diverse and growing membership from across the North Shore community.

In the late 1700's as art academies and drawing training evolved, plaster casts of great works of sculpture, were collected by the academies. Students were able to study and draw the effects of light and shadow as it fell over the motionless human form.
Learn basic drawing skills using pencils, charcoal and watercolour pencils. Create colourful graphic images with both oil pastels or soft pastels. Paint with Acrylics to portray images using a watercolour glaze technique or use thick Impasto Acrylic paint like oils.
While learning and mastering technique is a priority in my classes, an additional component is understanding how to encode and decode images so that students can push past creating a picture with technical excellence and onto creating ‘art’.
Choosing your own subject, media and style, you will create paintings from your own reference, photograph or imagination.Â
Explore a range of painting and drawing techniques from ink and watercolor to impasto and realism using acrylic paint. Bring along your own visual diary.
