This minor in Italian offers integrated study of Italian language and culture. As a language, Italian opens up the riches of Italy's cultural past and the fascination of its dynamic present.
It is one of the most widely spoken languages in Australia after English because of the ongoing migrant, intellectual, cultural and commercial links between Australia and Italy.
The Italian minor teaches you functional levels of competency in speaking, writing, listening and reading. Generic skills acquired in language study, in intercultural understanding, multi-tasking and communication, are highly valued by employers.
Completion of this minor gives the student the equivalent of Level A2/B1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the internationally recognised standard of language competence in European Languages. This minor is taken by beginners. It is incompatible with a pass in ATAR Italian: Second Language (ATISL).

In order for minors to be recognised on academic and graduation documents, students may only have a maximum of one unit overlapping between their unit sets.
Outcomes
Students are able to
show competence in the Italian language in the four macroskills of language acquisition—reading, writing, listening and speaking—rated according to the Common European Framework for Languages;
interact confidently and successfully in many situations involving Italian cultural conventions
interpret Italian language texts—written, audio, visual—at an intermediate level in the light of Italian culture and society; and
move effectively between the English and Italian languages and cultures.

Italian Language course is offered by Victorian School of Languages. Â In standards and content, courses are comparable to those offered in day school language classes, and follow a standard course design.

The student will be able to understand and use simple Italian sentences, introduce themselves, give personal information, basic socialising, make simple enquiries about restaurants and hotel reservations, departures/arrivals, time, numbers, street directions, car hire etc.
