Our classes are designed for adults and children at all levels of proficiency, from complete beginners to those who are well-experienced in a language.
We offer following levels for Japanese language. Each level is six weeks long (6 hours of instruction).
Below you can see all the levels we offer for Japanese language. If you start as a complete beginner at Polyglottist Language Academy, you can start with the first level and follow the sequence.
If you have studied the language of your choice somewhere else, please read the description of each level and sign up for a class based on the amount of instruction you have received.
Japanese Beginner 1
Japanese Beginner 1 is the first level of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. It is recommended for complete beginners, who have no knowledge of Japanese or students who have very basic knowledge of Japanese.
In this course, students will learn basic grammar and vocabulary to be able to understand everyday Japanese and express themselves in Japanese.
Japanese Beginner 2
The Japanese Beginner 2 class is the second part of the Japanese Beginner classes. Sign up for this class if you have taken one session of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 5-10 hours of instruction total and you know some simple sentence structures with action verbs, numbers, and basic vocabulary.
In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana and will start learning Kanji. The class will cover lessons 3 and 4 in Genki 1 textbook.
Japanese Beginner 3
The Japanese Beginner 3 class is the third part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too.
Sign up for this class if you have taken two sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 12-15 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 4
The Japanese Beginner 4 class is the fourth part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken three sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 18-20 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 5
The Japanese Beginner 5 class is the fifth part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken four sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 20-25 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 6
The Japanese Beginner 6 class is the sixth part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken five sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 25-30 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 7
The Japanese Beginner 7 class is the seventh part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken six sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 30-35 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 8
The Japanese Beginner 8 class is the eight part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken seven sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 40 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 9
The Japanese Beginner 9 class is the ninth part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken eight sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 45 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 10
The Japanese Beginner 10 class is the tenth part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken nine sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 50 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 11
The Japanese Beginner 11 class is the eleventh part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken ten sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 55 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Japanese Beginner 12
The Japanese Beginner 12 class is the twelfth part of the Japanese Beginner class. In this class, students will continue practicing Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji is introduced too. Sign up for this class if you have taken eleven sessions of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy.
If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, sign up for this class if you have studied for approximately 60 hours of instruction total and you know some basic grammar and vocabulary.
Low Intermediate Japanese
Low Intermediate Japanese is for students who took all 12 beginner levels of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. Students are expected to know the content of both part of Genki textbook. Students have to be able to read and write in Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana, and some Kanji.
The purpose of this class is to help students to practice grammar and vocabulary they previously learnt. In this class, students will be able to improve their grammar and vocabulary.
Intermediate Japanese
This course is taught in Japanese. Intermediate Japanese is for students who took all 12 beginner levels of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. Students are expected to know the content of both part of Genki textbook.
Students have to be able to read and write in Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana, and some Kanji.) The purpose of this class is continue practicing grammar and vocabulary. In this class, students will be able to learn more about Japanese culture and discuss it with their classmates.
Advanced Japanese
This course is taught in Japanese. Advanced Japanese is for students who took all 12 beginner levels of Japanese at Polyglottist Language Academy. Students are expected to know the content of both part of Genki textbook. Students have to be able to read and write in Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana, and some Kanji.)
The purpose of this class is continue practicing grammar and vocabulary. Students will deepen their vocabulary and their grasp of Japanese grammar through conversation, expressing opinions and discussing authentic materials such as articles, news, films, etc.

Additionally, we offer individual in-person and online writing classes to high school students looking to improve their writing skills. Our writing program provides personalized guidance from experienced instructors to identify writing strengths and weaknesses and create a customized plan to help students achieve their goals.
We also offer help with writing college essays, a critical component of the college application process.
The CALA approach to learning languages focuses on high-frequency vocabulary—the words, phrases, expressions, and grammar that you are most likely to encounter in day-to-day life. We go narrow-and-deep with this vocabulary.
Japanese is spoken by about 130 million in Japan. There is no link between Japanese and any other language living or dead. It adopted the Chinese characters in the 3rd century AD.
The Japanese Program at SDSU offers a variety of courses designed to develop advanced language skills which can lead to a number of careers after graduation.
