The Japanese Program at SDSU offers a variety of courses designed to develop advanced language skills which can lead to a number of careers after graduation. A major or a minor in Japanese is also a good preparation for graduate programs in such areas as Asian studies, anthropology, economics, history, international business, international law, journalism, librarianship, linguistics, political science, and public administration.
It also gives graduates an advantage in looking for positions in Japan in areas such as language teaching, business consulting, or journalism.
Since its founding in 1897, the university has grown to become a leading public research university, and a federally-designated Hispanic-serving Institution. SDSU is the oldest higher education institution in San Diego, uniquely situated only 30 minutes north of the U.S.-Mexico border on Kumeyaay land. Our community is fully committed to excellent teaching, meaningful research and service to our regional community and others we serve throughout the state, across the nation and internationally.
For generations, SDSU has overcome hurdles and defied expectations, forging ahead to deliver academic excellence, student success and groundbreaking research. We will continue to do so as we build SDSU’s new chapter of inclusive opportunity for more students, reimagining a university designed to thrive for many years to come, and impacting San Diego, our border region, and the world as never before.

ILI’s foreign language courses are tailored to suit the student’s specific needs and goals. We offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced class levels in each language. However, our instructors do not follow a fixed curriculum for each class.
The approach of the Washington Academy of Languages program is to emphasize the use of authentic Japanese as it is naturally spoken and written. Speaking and listening are practiced at normal speeds in the classroom. As a result, students can communicate easily with native speakers.
For anyone seeking to immerse theirself in understanding another culture, learning the language is an essential starting point. Â In mastering the Japanese language a student also learns the rules of social conduct that are actually written into the language.
