Learn to sail in downtown Toronto with St. James Town Sailing Club this season!
Learn to sail in downtown Toronto with St. James Town Sailing Club this season! We offer adult sailing lessons for sailors of all skill levels, from total beginner ("How do you get in the boat?") to seasoned racers (race training clinics).
At J-Town, we do not compromise on safety. While anyone is welcome to crew, all members need to have sufficient skills to helm (be responsible for taking a boat out).
To helm our albacores, you either need to successfully pass your CANSail 1&2 course at J-Town or be an Old Salt . There are additional requirements to helm lasers or catamarans (see corresponding pages).
We offer members beginners' Sailing Lessons covering CANSail 1 and 2 curriculum, as well as more advanced CANSail 3 & CANSail 4 courses. All these classes are taught on Albacores.
Beginner Course (CANSAIL 1&2)
Beginner's course is called CANSail 1&2. It is offered between May and August. Old salts are needed to helm albacores during the first sessions of each course.
If you are available to do so, please sign up using the Old Salt 4 CANSail Sign up spreadsheet. The 2024 fee for CANSail 1&2 courses is $130 (no tax), plus membership fees.
St. James Town Sailing Club was created over the winter of 1967/1968 by a small group of sailors who wanted an inexpensive alternative to the established yacht clubs in Toronto.
In its first season, home for almost all of the members of the club was the newly built St. James Town apartment complex. The club was backed by the St. James Town YMCA branch, both financially and by its well respected name.
The club’s first fleet of Albacores (7 by the end of the season) was leased from the builder, Grampion Marine, for the sailing season.
We rented space at the Toronto Island Marina, erected a small structure to serve as an equipment locker, and acquired an old 14-foot wooden boat and a 1950’s vintage five horsepower outboard motor for rescue purposes.
We were one of the original founding clubs of the Friday Night Racing program. In 1973, the club relocated to its present site with five other clubs and formed the Outer Harbour Sailing Federation (OHSF).
J-Town is located on land created from landfill and formerly owned by the Toronto Harbour Commission (THC), a joint federal-municipal government agency.
For formal basic sailing training, CANSail 1/2 introduces novice members to boat handling, the different points of sail, and other basic sailing skills.
This program is for those sailors who want to learn to sail independently.
The Club is pleased to have Jennifer Adriaanse as our coach dedicated to providing Adult Learn to Sail options for this summer.
A one-day introductory course designed to give a quick overview of sailing before joining a full course.
Ontario Sailing’s Coach Development Program provides training and certification for CANSail Dinghy Instructors.
