With these figures in mind, we need to develop talent in cybersecurity – and fast! The canadian institute for cybersecurity (cic) at the university of new brunswick is using 20+ years of cyber- security innovation and talent development to provide a one-year master of applied cybersecurity (macsec). 

Training and education in cybersecurity falls far short of current needs, and what will be required in the future. Worldwide, there are 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity positions. Such skills shortage leaves the public, private sectors, and governments vulnerable. Moreover, the global cost of cyber-attacks is believed to grow to $10.5 trillion by 2025. 

The Faculty of Computer Science and CIC are partnering to develop talent – ready to contribute as cybersecurity experts.

The topics explored throughout the year-long graduate program in cybersecurity include:

  • Principles of Data Communications and Networks Modelling
  • Cryptanalysis and database security
  • Fundamentals of information assurance
  • Foundations of privacy
  • Network security
  • Software security
  • Digital forensics elective + capstone project
  • Condensed training, R&D  project

Program structure

  • The program is structured in three semesters (Fall, Winter, and Summer) for a total duration of one year. The course schedule is as follows.

Fall/winter terms

  • CS2413: Fundamentals of Information Security (only if this prerequisite is missing)
  • CS6865: Principles of Data Communications and Networks Modelling
  • CS6411: Fundamentals of Information Assurance
  • CS6355: Cryptanalysis and Database Security
  • CS6415: Network Security
  • CS6413: Foundations of Privacy
  • CS6417: Software Security
  • One course from (CS6075, CS6585, CS6735, TME3423, TME6386, MBA6606)

Summer term

  • CS6419: Digital Forensics
  • CS6495: Capstone Project (6 credits)
  • St. John's Branch
