Course Overview

This course leads to the National Award for SEN Co-ordination, a statutory requirement for new SENCOs in post since 2009 within 3 years of appointment. It’s suitable if you have QTS/QLS – Qualified Teacher Status and you’ve completed your induction period according to SEND Regs 2014, para:24 – or EYTS for an award applicable to 0-5 only.

The course content is designed for students who are currently working in a wide range of settings – from early years to further education. You’ll be encouraged to bring your own professional experiences into your studies. Current research underpins the teaching on this dynamic course, combining theory with practical exercises.

Study Style

The curriculum includes direct teaching plus guided independent study, and you’ll be assessed 100% by coursework. You’ll be supported by highly experienced and research-active teaching staff, who can support the needs of part-time students. You’ll need to have the endorsement of the Head Teacher / Executive in your setting, enabling you to use real world practice for reflection.

There are two outcomes for this course – the Postgraduate Certificate in Special Educational Needs, and the National Award of SEN Coordination (NASENCO). Those students who are qualified teachers and gain the Postgraduate Certificate can convert their award to a NASENCO Award within five years on completion of their SENCO portfolio.
