An overhead bridge crane is a configuration of a single girder or double girder design. In simple terms, a bridge girder, or beam, is the support structure that allows the operator to move trolley and hoist from side-to-side along the bridge. The trolley is used to precisely position the hoist prior to raising or lowering a load in a safe work manner.

Cab overhead cranes is an encased setup with glass panelled flooring for operator to view the cargo from above whilst being moved.

Unlike mobile or construction cranes, Cab overhead cranes are typically used for either manufacturing or maintenance applications, where efficiency or downtime are critical factors.

Operators who are not adequately trained in the Cab controlled overhead crane operations are at great risk of injury or death. Training is a vital issue and DMR 18(11) prohibits the operation of Overhead cranes by untrained persons.
