This qualification provides employees with essential knowledge about fire safety in the workplace including how to prevent fires from starting and what action to take when the fire alarm sounds.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO) requires a ‘responsible person’(usually employer or business owner) to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire and ensure employees and visitors can escape safely if a fire occurs.

This must include suitable and sufficient instruction on the appropriate precautions and actions to be taken by employees to safeguard themselves and others on the premises.

Who should attend

All employees undertaking induction training, including those with no specific fire safety role., increasing their fire safety awareness .This training helps to fulfil an employers legal duty to train all their staff in fire safety.

Before you start…

You’ll need to make sure you’ve met the following requirements before you attend your course:

  • Learners must be at least 16 years old on the first day of the training.
  • There are no other formal entry requirements but to benefit from the learning we advise that Learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy or numeracy or equivalent.

 

Course Overview

The content of the course covers:

  • Identify the main causes of fires in the workplace.
  • Recognise the main costs of fires in the workplace for employers, employees and society.
  • Recognise their own duties and responsibilities in relation to fire safety at work.
  • Identify the duties and responsibilities of fire wardens, and other people who may be required to take action as part of fire risk controls or during an emergency.
  • Recall the action to be taken in the event of a fire in the workplace, including methods of raising the alarm and contacting the emergency services.
  • Identify the key elements for effective fire management in the workplace.
  • Recognise how the components of the fire triangle can be used to control fire risks.
  • Identify different fire risk control measures.
  • Recognise fire prevention measures that can be taken to minimise fire risks.
  • Recall the safe operating parameters for the use of portable fire-fighting equipment.
  • Outline simple checks for ensuring that fire safety equipment is serviceable and safe to use.
