Duration : 4 months (6 weeks theory and 11 weeks practicals)

QCTO Accredited Home Based Care Assistants (Accreditation Number: 01-QCTO/SDP120723164318) provides supervised basic physical and emotional support to patients and their families/household members within a home-based, residential and health care setting environment. They work under the direct supervision of a professional supervisor.

The services a Home Based Care Assistant focuses on:

  • Therapeutic work (to make better)
  • Rehabilitative work ( to restore to health)
  • Long term maintenance (to care for over a long time)
  • Palliative care (for those with life-limiting conditions)

This part qualification is therefore essential in supporting the National strategies for providing quality and affordable health care to all the citizens of South Africa.

 

Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as a Home Based Care Assistant.

 

Outcomes:

At the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Assess, plan and provide holistic (physical, spiritual, emotional and social) care and support for patients and household members.
  • Capacitate patient and household/family members as participants in the patient care team.

 

Minimum Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is a NQF Level 1 qualification or equivalent.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning:
    • RPL for access to the external integrated summative assessment
    • RPL for access to the part qualification.

 

Course Assessment:

This qualification is made up of the following compulsory Knowledge and Practical Skill Modules and Work Experience Modules. Candidates prepare a Portfolio of Evidence during class and demonstrate that they can perform the various roles of Home-Based Care Assistants. A Statement of results will be issued which allows a learner to write the EISA.

Learners will write the EISA is an External National Exam that is meant to ensure a uniform standard for the qualification.

 

Modules Include:

Ethics, Communication, Self-care, patient rights, Anatomy, Diseases, Disability, Patient care, Activities of Daily Living, Palliative Care

 

Costs include:

  • Student package: Uniform top, Gilet, stationary .branded pen, bag and preparation towards the External Integrated Summative Assessment (examination)

 

Cost Excludes:

  • Travel allowance, Food, Professional Indemnity, Hepatitis injection, Police Clearance, R200 Pre Assessment & R2000 Registration fee.
