Course Details

The Beginners Sewing course runs over 12 weeks, you make 8 items and learn the following in your sewing classes:

  • Lesson 1 – Introduction to the sewing machine, threading, tension and stitch basics. Different types of needles and what they are used for. Basic types of seams. Principles of cutting, grainlines, different fabric types and reading a pattern.
  • Lesson 2 – Make a Pillowcase.  Learning basic pattern reading, how to cut on the grainline. Sewing straight lines. (Fabric will be supplied for this project) After this lesson we will go to Fabric World in Wynberg to choose and purchase fabrics and trims for the projects below. If this is an evening class then we will have to go on a Saturday at lunch time to the fabric shop.
  • Lesson 3 – Shopping Bag. Practicing cutting, accurate sewing and making a 3 dimensional bag.
  • Lesson 4 – Drawstring Bag. Working with an open seam. Also learning how to make a slit in a garment. Practising sewing accurately.
  • Lesson 5 and 6 – Elastic. Elasticated pants. In this lesson you will learn how to take basic measurements of your body and trace out the pattern in your size. Then you will sew up the pants and insert the elastic.
  • Lesson 7 – Oven Gloves. Working with curves and what to do in order to ensure the curves come out beautifully.
  • Lesson 8 – Pencil Cases. Teaching you how to sew in a zip. You will make two pencil cases, one lined and one unlined.
  • Lesson 9 – Making samples of darts, pleats, gathers, how to cut, join and sew on bias binding, the french seam and buttonholes.
  • Lesson 10 – Cushion Cover with piping and a hidden zip.
  • Lesson 11 and 12 – Apron with a patch pocket, facing and bias binding.  Patterns for the things made in class will be provided and these you will keep with your printed out notes on the lessons. You can buy additional patterns from me.
