Course Details

This course will prepare you to transition to work with critically ill patients and build-on your current nursing knowledge to develop an understanding of critical care nursing methods and specialised skills.

You will study this course over 12-weeks online, which will require approximately 10 hours of study time per-week including a two-hour online tutorial.

As the course is online you will have the flexibility to study when and at times that suit your work and personal life. Our online learning environment provides engaging and interesting lectures and discussion forums in bite-sized pieces and is available on your PC, laptop, or mobile device.

On completion, you may complete two further units over 12-weeks to earn a Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing (Critical Care Nursing) or expand your nursing career and study a Master of Nursing with IHM.

 

Students will learn to:

  • Apply critical thinking processes, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication to the evaluation and administration of nursing care delivered to critically ill patients within the critical care healthcare team

  • Critically review the roles, functions, and the scope of practice of the critical care nurse in critical care settings

  • Demonstrate leadership within a multidisciplinary healthcare team responsible for delivering excellent therapeutic treatment to patients in critical care settings

  • Perform an assessment of the legal, ethical, social, cultural, and political issues that influence the delivery of person-centered healthcare

  • Recognize, evaluate, and use evidence-based nursing strategies while caring for clients in critical care settings

 

Course Aims

IHM’s critical care speciality course is a postgraduate course leading to a Master of Nursing course. Students may continue their education by enrolling in a Master of Nursing programme online or on campus. The course is designed to elevate students’ patient care to an international level by sharpening their theoretical foundations in nursing science as well as their practical knowledge and abilities.
