Course Outcomes:

Specific outcome 1: Demonstrate an understanding of health and safety on a construction site.

  • Explain the implications of health and safety legislation and regulations in relation to a construction site.
  • Explain the principles of safety in relation to a construction site.
  • Explain the principles of safety management systems in relation to a construction site.
  • Explain the reporting of health and safety issues in terms of legislation and organizational procedures.

 

Specific outcome 2: Explain hazards in construction work areas and preventative measures.

  • Identify and address potential hazards in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Identify and demonstrate the use of protective gear and equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and organizational procedures.
  • Explain the implications of working in confined spaces in relation to a construction site.
  • Explain the handling, transportation, storage and utilization of materials according to material properties and organizational procedures.
  • Explain the implications of working at elevated levels are explained in relation to safety requirements.
  • Explain the implications of working in traffic are explained in relation to safety requirements.

 

Specific outcome 3: Co-ordinate first aid resources in the case of an emergency.

  • Identify the location of fire extinguishers, hoses and alarms is identified in terms of safety requirements.
  • Distinguish the types of fire extinguishers in relation to their uses and purpose.
  • Explain the recognition of emergencies in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Report injuries involving individuals in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Identify the location of first aid material and trained first aid staff according to organizational policies and procedures.

 

Specific outcome 4: Develop and implement a health and safety site plan.

  • Identify health and safety needs and implement measures to address these needs are according to organizational procedures.
  • Explain the duties regarding management responsibility for workplace safety according to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Compile and communicate a health and safety plan to staff incorporating preventative strategies in accordance with organizational procedures.

 

 

Specific outcome 5: monitor the implementation of the health and safety plan, systems and procedures.

  • Induct visitors and all staff in terms of the health and safety plan. 5.2 Implement health and safety statutory requirements in terms of notifications and appointments.
  • Monitor and update health and safety plan to incorporate changes in terms of policies, procedures and systems.
  • Implement training programs to train staff in terms of regulations and organizational procedures.
