Tap dancing takes its name from the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes which make a "tapping" sound when they strike a hard floor. Lively and rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer, but also a percussive musician, as Tap dancers make frequent use of syncopation.

Tap can have a funky street feel, like "Tap Dogs" or have that old school charm and style, like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Tap combines elegance, grace, rhythm, originality and precision. It is dynamic, exhilarating and fun. A love of tap dance lasts a lifetime.
Welcome to Julia Macalpine Dance Studio - a well-established dance studio with a 30-year history.
Julia Macalpine - Principal - leads a team of committed, experienced staff in a fun yet professional environment. Our pupils are prepared for R.A.D. and I.ST.D. exams, as well as having the opportunity to perform on stage in our famously spectacular performance and competitive events. Many of our former pupils have gone on to successful careers in the performing arts.
At JMDS we balance high standards with a friendly atmosphere which both pupils and parents enjoy. We hope to inspire and develop self-confidence, creativity and a passion for dance in every child that will last forever.
With two spacious, fully equipped air-conditioned studios in Manoora and Manunda in Cairns - North Queensland, we offer an exciting range of dance styles including ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, tap and musical theatre.
We offer classes for all ages and abilities that are taught in a safe and supportive environment.
We teach both freestyle tap focusing on timing, light and shade, style and performance and for the technical elements we teach a more traditional style of tap.
Some of our students started tap dancing as young as 70 years old, and have reaped the rewards improving balance, memory, fitness and as they put it “groove”. It’s never too late to start tap dancing.
Classes focus on rhythm, timing, percussion and coordination through the Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) syllabus.
Lake Macquarie Dance Centre has qualified teachers in tap dance to help students turn dance movements into a rhythmic percussion-like display.
